⚠️ This is a Known Issue We're Actively Working On
Our engineering team has identified a bug affecting Kōkua's echo cancellation. This causes Kōkua's voice to echo, cut out intermittently, or sound distorted during sessions — especially when using the microphone and speaker simultaneously.
We're sorry this is affecting your experience. A fix is underway and we'll update this article when it's released.
What's Happening
You may notice one or more of the following during a Kōkua session:
Kōkua's voice echoes or repeats
Your own voice is played back to you
Kōkua's audio cuts in and out mid-sentence
Kōkua stops speaking partway through a response
The session becomes one-directional (you can hear Kōkua but Kōkua can't hear you, or vice versa)
Workaround
These steps may reduce the issue while the fix is in progress:
Use headphones — Using headphones (wired or Bluetooth) often eliminates the echo by preventing mic/speaker feedback loops.
Lower your device volume — If speaker volume is high, it can cause feedback that trips the echo cancellation. Try reducing volume during sessions.
Switch to text mode — If voice quality is too poor to have a conversation, you can use Kōkua via text input instead.
Mute and unmute — If Kōkua cuts out mid-sentence, briefly muting and unmuting your mic may reset the audio pipeline.
Will Standard Troubleshooting Help?
Because this is a confirmed engineering-level bug with echo cancellation, steps like clearing cache, reinstalling, or restarting the device are unlikely to fix this. You're welcome to try them, but we don't want you to spend time on steps that won't resolve the underlying issue.
